Building the Malaysian Innovation Ecosystem: Lesson from the European Union Experience

Innovation has become a vital element to solve major global challenges such as food security, climate change, health needs, education and many others. Knowing the importance, Malaysia has started to prioritise its national agenda by embedding innovation as one of the major theme.

In conjunction with this, the Perdana School of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in collaboration with the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR), University of Manchester hosted an international seminar and roundtable on Building the Malaysian Innovation Ecosystem: Lesson from the European Union Experience held on 18 April 2013.

Dr Paul Cunningham, Director of MIoIR, and Ms Kate Barker were the main speakers of the event which was attended by 200 international participants. Mr Rushdi Abdul Rahim of myForesight® was invited to share the local experience and facilitate the roundtable session; under the topic of ‘Navigating Innovation through Technology Foresight’. Other topics discussed exploring issues on innovation in entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights, public private partnership and sustainability.

The session successfully collected and gathered knowledge and ideas from all the invited speakers, conveners and participants on the discussed issues and constraints, the alternatives and the way forward. Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman, the CEO and President of MIGHT also delivered a closing address of the event upon listening to some of the findings and deliberations during the roundtable.
